With
her father serving as an administrator and governor in Micronesia,
Miriam began her life immersed in the graciousness and sensory
beauty of these Pacific Islands. She went to boarding school
in Hawaii, then studied art and design at colleges in Texas
and California. Her foray as an assistant to a clothing
buyer ignited her interest in fashion design, only to be
distracted and swept away by designer Robson Splane. For
the next several years she managed their design firm, Splane
Design Associates, Inc. in Southern California. Most recently,
Miriam and Robson moved their studios to a countryside setting
in San Diego's North County. It is here - in the process
of reinventing their design practice - that the Miriam J
clothing design company was born.
Miriam rekindled her friendship and began collaboration
with established fashion designer, Barbara Blatz-Stone.
She soon realized that their design values and creative
aspirations complemented the Miriam J vision. As Miriam
says, "We design clothes that we love. We design for
the woman who knows who she is; she defines herself by her
choices and not by labels. She is a woman who embraces casual
elegance, feminine softness and fashion individuality."
Both designers felt there was something missing for today's
woman - "clothes for the smart, savvy adventurous woman
who can be sexy at a moment's notice... the woman who knows
who she is and loves it."
Miriam and Barbara incorporate a spectrum of colors and
prints in natural based fibers of silk, linen and cotton.
They utilize recognized vendors to deliver the highest quality
of workmanship possible for each garment. Production takes
place in the Los Angeles garment district, and the Miriam
J office on West 9th Street is central to the activities
involved in producing a dynamic clothing line.
Miriam feels that "Design influences our emotional
as well as our physical world. It coaxes us to interact
with our environment, and it persuades us to engage in daily
living as we aspire for balance and harmony." It is
with those spiritual and creative instincts that Miriam
and Barbara are currently collaborating with other artists
from the worlds of music, art and fashion.
